Are You a first time horse owner or thinking of being one?

Some times we get into projects with out knowing what they entail! Like for instance, my quilting project, I started three years ago thinking it would be a breeze! Well guess what, It took me three years to get the blocks together and now as I look at all the hand quilting I had planned I think it will take the rest of my life to finish it! The project was bigger then I thought!
What does that have to do with owning a horse? Well sometimes we get into situations before we know what the project requires. Like for instance, Horses need worming every several months , trimming every six weeks, they need shots, grooming , proper food ,do you know what kind of hay and supplements ? Does your saddle fit your horse ? Do you know how to get a good fit ?Did you know they need sand removel treatment's , Do you know how to treat wounds, skin irritations ,clean hoofs , sheaths, & eyes? Before stepping off into it ,one must be informed as to what the project requires to be able have a successful experience! Happy trails!

Now for the spring riding reminder: as we all turn our thoughts to the trail and the riding season , I remind myself I must condition my horse after the winters inactivity before I hit the trail. start in the round pen or if you don't have one use a launge line or start taking walks with your horse it will condition both of you ! Clean up your tack ,Wash or vacuum the saddle blanket's, oil the ole saddle , If your like me I oil or saddle soap my saddles several times during the winters off time. Then that's already done for my spring cleaning time .. Happy Trails see ya there!

The differences between horses and politions

1 . Horses will never lie
2 . Horses will never steal
3 . Horses are loyal to their bosses
4 . Horses only take what need
5 . A horse will carry you until he drops if asked to
6. Horses are what made America great
7. Horses always understand their jobs & who they're working for
8. As for a comparison between the two ,the horse wins
9. They come in all colors , shapes, sizes, and genders, they don't seem to notice nor care
10 . They just do their job with no thought of personal gain
11 . There is no such thing as a dishonest or corrupt horse
12. Now do they sound anything like our politicians ?

Foaling Time is nearing!

Well it is time to get ready for foaling here are some suggestions.. Bed with straw instead with shavings as there is less chances of bacteria breeding in straw. Rap tail to prevent it from becoming soiled during the birthing process. The signs of Labor are Agitation, pacing, decreased appetite, frequent passage of small amounts or urine or manure, Light sweating ,Pawing, kicking at the belly and looking around at the belly.
The birth of a foal is an exciting event and in most cases everything goes well. The process usually goes well with out our intervention, but if the mare or foal is down for more then a half an hour it is wise to call your Vet for instructions and any unusual happenings in the delivery process Call for help don't try and figure it out your self....

Who Is the boss you or your horse?

The rider is the teacher ,your horse is the student! The right answer is always plainer to you then to your horse. What do you let him get away with? Does he stop to eat grass while you are leading him or when you are riding him? Does he set the pace when you are riding him ? I had a horse once that would lag behind all the other horses on a trail ride then trot to catch up .Believe me that got old fast on an all day trail ride . my rear end wasn't the same for days! Who was the boss? Control is a big issue and it goes hand and hand with safety for you and your horse!
When you are leading or riding him does he determined the speed? Evaluate your actions ,are you in command or is he? For instant, when grooming your horse does he move into your space so that you move out of his way? Then he is the boss ! Allowing him to do this sends him a signal he is in charge . I push my thumb into his hip or side holding it firm until he gives to the pressure . he will learn fast that every time he crowds you in your space, you will push your thumb into his side and will soon stop the crowding. If he insists on setting his own speed when your leading or riding him STOP and make him stand. Each time he sets his own pace stop him again until he gets the message . You are the boss! The more consistent you are the more consistent your horses performance will be... Be patient and consistent. Its like teaching a small child No, No don't touch that dish ,you tell the child no no several times then let down on the No's and let the child grab the dish . The child then learns ,I'll hear several No No,s and then I can grab the dish. Horses react the same way don't let him eat grass on two trail rides and then on the third trail ride decide for just this once I'll let him eat grass while riding . That send him a message just like the child that grabbed the glass bowl. He will always try to eat grass while riding because maybe this is the time it will be OK. Make your signals clear and work on maintaining control for the safety of you and your horse!
